Global Overview of Saline Groundwater Occurrence and Genesis, map at 1:50 000 000
Groundwater is an important water source, applied to a myriad of uses. from agricultural to domstic uses. However, groundwater is sometimes saline and this can cause problems. Saline groundwater may cause health problems, decrease agricultural yields and profits, destroy fertile agricultural lands, jeopardize livelihoods, increase costs of infrastructure maintenance and of industrial processes and it may change or even destroy eco-systems if groundwater levels change.
To be able to manage saline groundwater, researchers, water resources specialists, policy makers and politicians need information on the scope, distribution, dynamics and severity of groundwater salinity. IGRAC contributes to provide such essential information for this broad group of people and aims to enhance their general understanding of groundwater salinity, promote early diagnosis of possible changes and widen their inspiration for selecting effective measures for interventions.
To this end, IGRAC published a comprehensive report on saline groundwater in 2009, accompanied by a global map of the saline groundwater occurrence and genesis.
