High Nitrogen in clay

It is not yet clear what the reason is of high nitrate concentrations in some parts of the Netherlands. European regulation dictates that Nitrate concentrations must remain below certain levels, however, what if these high concentrations occur because of natural processes? 

We assessed the origin of Nitrate in Dutch clays of the Dutch low-lands and great river area. One of the aspects to assess was the occurrence of pyrite in the subsoil.
