Sustainable Development

Environmentalism is probably as old as humanity. Man worshiped the sun, moon, water and other environmental features with reason. We depend on our environment and however hard we may try to control that environment, we will always be small and insignificant compared to some forces of nature. Whatever we invent and however our societies develop, we will always depend on natural resources to sustain our societies. But the state of the Earth throughout the ages lead to a growing realisation:

The term Sustainable Development was defined in the 1980's by the UN-established Brundtland Commission, as development that "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs".

With over a billion people living on less than a dollar a day, more than 800 million malnourished, and over two and a half billion who lack access to adequate sanitation, it is clear that not all needs are presently met. The present population growth in addition implies that the needs of many more will need to be met in the future.

The present global situation implies that a world without development is not an option and achieving ever more sustainable development a must.
