Hydrogeology

The storage and movement of water in the sub-surface is researched in hydrogeology. Being an environmental geochemist, hydrogeology is a fascinating and important aspect of my work area. The water cycle connects all the spheres of the earth: the atmosphere, the hydrosphere and the sub-surface. In addition, water plays an important role in all quantitative and chemical exchanges at the interfaces of these spheres.

Whereas surface water is not normally considered potable, unless processed, groundwater can be a reliable and safe source of water for many on earth. Especially in arid regions it may also be the only source of water for several months each year. Hidden away in the ground, it is difficult to assess or control.
